If you have ever bought a fine piece of jewelry before I am sure you have heard the word carat used by your jeweler before.
Did you actually understand what it meant?
Did you jeweler say carat or Karat? Does it matter?
Let’s talk about Carat..with a C.
Carat refers to the weight of a gemstone. It has nothing to do with the shape, or face size of the stone what so ever. This is why many times a stone that is cut in a round shape will visually look larger than a stone cut in a princess or square shape. With a princess cut stone the culet or bottom of the stone needs to be cut much deeper for the stone to have the correct appearance.
Another thing to remember is that when it comes to carats not all gemstones are equal. That is because the specific gravity of all gemstones is not the same. For instance a 1 ct diamond is 6.5 Dwt or penny weights, but a 1 ct sapphire is only approx. 6.0 Dwt.
The other thing to remember when talking about Carats is that many times a slight difference in carat weight can have a large impact on price. For instance a 3 ct diamond could be in fact thousands of dollars more expensive than a 2.95 carat diamond.
Although to truly get into that discussion there are many more factors that would affect the price of the stone.
In fact there are 4 and they are called the 4 C’s of Diamond buying…but that will have to wait for another time.
