July is my favorite month of the whole year. The weather is great, no school, backyard BBQ’s, did I mention the 4th? July is simply the best! The only way this great month could get any better is if you also got to celebrate your birthday during it. If you happen to be lucky enough to have a July birthday you get the unmatched beauty of the Ruby as your birthstone.
Rubies can command the highest per-carat price of any colored stone. This makes ruby one of the most important gems in the colored stone market. In its purest form, the mineral corundum is colorless. Trace elements that become part of the mineral’s crystal structure cause variations in its color. Chromium is the trace element that causes ruby’s red color.
Ruby is a very durable stone ranking a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale.
Ruby is found in Africa and the middle east, there is also a new in Greenland.
Reasons we love Ruby..
Fine ruby glows with intense red in sunlight thanks to red fluorescence, which intensifies its red color.
The first laser was created in 1960 using the red fluorescence light emitted by ruby.
Chromium causes ruby’s red. Gemologists consider it the “rock star” of trace elements.
